Canberra Hospital - Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Care (RACC) Services
ACT Health’s Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Care (RACC) service offer acute medical care and rehabilitation care at Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital.
Our programs aim to maintain or improve independence and function, and assist both older people and people who have sustained traumatic injuries to live independently.
RACC services provided at the Canberra Hospital include:
- Geriatric Specialist Outpatient Services,
- Rehabilitation Specialist Outpatient Services,
- Acute Care of the Elderly (Ward 11A),
- Ortho-geriatric (Ward 11B),
- Rehabilitation Ward (12B),
- Exercise Physiology Department.
- Acute Care of the Eldery (ACE) - Ward 11A
The Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) Ward 11A provides patients with a comprehensive multidisciplinary service that includes assessing the way you function at home, your living arrangements, diet, memory, any changes in your health, community supports and looking at any health needs you may have which are not currently being met.
The ACE team includes Geriatricians (Doctors who specialise in the medical care of clients aged over 65yrs), Nurses, Allied Health staff (Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologist, Dieticians, Social Workers, Psychologists) and a Discharge Planner.
A combination of these staff members work 7 days a week, however the Allied Health staff only work in the unit between Monday and Friday 8:30am-5:00pm (excluding public holidays).
Admission into this ward is mostly through the Emergency Department of the Canberra Hospital. Admission may also be arranged through Geriatric consultation at Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital, the Falls Clinic and through Psycho geriatric referral.

- Geriatric Medicine Outpatient Clinic - Building 15
The Geriatric Medicine Outpatient Clinic is staffed by experienced Geriatricians who will provide a specialist consultative service for a range of medical conditions occurring in older age. This is a free service.
To access this specialised service you will need a referral from you General Practitioner (GP) or other doctor. All referrals are to be faxed to the Community Health Intake (CHI) on 6205 2611.
Certain eligibility requirements exist for accessing the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic. These requirements can be obtained through contacting the clinic administrator directly.
Clinic appointment times are available every Monday and Thursday (excluding public holidays).

- Ortho-Geriatric Medicine - Ward 11B
The Ortho-Geriatric Medicine Service is routinely provided to orthopaedic inpatients at the Canberra Hospital, who are over the age of 65 years.
The Ortho-Geriatric Medicine Service assesses patients with an aim to provide advice regarding management of medical conditions, anti-osteoporosis treatment, falls prevention and optimise medication management following surgery.
The service is generally provided between Monday and Friday 8:30am-5:00pm (excluding public holidays), although service is available outside of these hours when required.

Visiting hours at Canberra Hospital have changed to 0600 to 2100, except for Mental Health and the Alcohol & Drug Service.
