Canberra Hospital - Forensic and Medical Sexual Assault Care (FAMSAC)

FAMSAC provides forensic and medical sexual assault care to people who have been sexually assaulted. There are many issues that may concern the person following a sexual assault. These include:

  • Health care matters: We offer assessment and medical management of acute injury, discussion of risk and consideration of prophylaxis against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. We offer baseline and follow up screening for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. We also offer early review of evolving musculoskeletal and genital injury.
  • Psychological support: The acute and ongoing needs of sexual assault survivors are wide-ranging. We work closely with the Canberra Rape Crisis Centre who provide a 24-hour on-call service via phone: 62472525. CRCC provide attendance at forensic medical examination and offer follow up care.
  • Legal Process: Any medical practitioner may be asked to attend court in a sexual assault matter. All doctors and nurses who work in FAMSAC attend regular updated education sessions in order to be well informed with the legal, medical and psychological aspects of sexual assault. All FAMSAC clinical staff conduct forensic medical examinations, maintain chain of custody procedures, prepare legal reports and are able to present evidence in court in the role of the expert witness as required.
